In this episode, Dr. Vanessa Charlot discusses her professional journey and the philosophy behind her documentary photography. She describes her creative process as a form of "excavation," in which she captures the authentic, raw essence of people before societal labels define them. Dr. Charlot emphasizes the importance of centering marginalized voices, especially within Black, brown, and queer communities. Her photography moves her subjects from the periphery to the heart of the visual narrative. Dr. Charlot's work eventually led her to Mississippi, where she has documented the lived experiences of former sharecroppers and joined the faculty at Ole Miss.
